Students in first through third grade
Language Arts
The language arts curriculum incorporates whole language supplemented with instruction in phonics. The language arts program focuses on the development of listening, pronunciation, reading, writing, spelling and speaking skills. Direct instruction, individualized instruction, group activities, hands-on projects, and cooperative learning activities are utilized.
Mathematics
The mathematics curriculum stresses the development of basic skills and the application of math concepts. The program also emphasizes the development of higher order thinking skills. Direct instruction, individualized instruction, cooperative learning, computer tutorial activities, and manipulatives are utilized.
Science
The science curriculum is designed to help students develop an awareness of the world around them. This is achieved through the use of textbooks, experiments, hands-on activities, cooperative learning and direct instruction.
Social Studies
The social studies curriculum concentrates on relationships at the family, community, national, and international levels. Stories, videos, role-playing, games, hands-on activities, and cooperative learning are used to achieve the objectives of the curriculum.
Religion
The religion curriculum focuses on developing faith; providing instruction about doctrine, Scripture, and morality; building a rich value system; and relating Christ's teachings to daily life. Daily prayer, sacramental preparation, and service projects are important components of the program. By attending our weekly school liturgy, students learn to participate in the Mass and practice their faith.
Additional items
Computer studies, art, music, and physical education are incorporated into the educational program in first through third grade.
Evaluation and assessment of student progress at the primary level is made through activities, projects, portfolios, quizzes, tests, and teacher observations. Students at the primary level take the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) literacy evaluations three times each school year.
*Students in third grade also take the Stanford Achievement Test and the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test.
